South
Sudan Gains Independence!
Juba
-- The capitol of the world's newest nation thundered in jubilation
as the sound of independence rang throughout the land. South Sudan
gained its independence from its new neighbor to the north --
Sudan, at midnight July 9 (2100 GMT) after decades of bitter violence
and civil war that left more than 1.5 million dead.
Salva Kiir took the oath as president of the Republic of South
Sudan. The infant nation faces tremendous challenges including
the fragile peace of a 2005 treaty, a staggering illiteracy rate
and it is one of the most underdeveloped countries in the world.
The people of South Sudan have been fighting a struggle against
genocide, drought, hunger and many other critical issues.
Sudan's president, Omar al-Bashir, who has been accused of war
crimes against humanity and recently appreared at The Hague to
respond to those charges, was among the world leaders and dignitaries
in attendance at the new nation's flag-raising ceremony. Sudan
was the first of the world's nations to recognize it's new neighbor,
followed quickly by the United States, Russia, the United Kingdom
and a host of others. Mr. Bashir said "We congratulate our brothers
in the south for the establishment of their new state. We share
their joy and celebration. The will of the people of the south
has to be respected." Other dignitaries attending included UN
Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, Former U.S. Secretary of State
Colin Powell, U.S. ambassador to the UN Ann Rice.
Sudan was the largest country in Africa before its divorce with
the Republic of Sudan which is about the size of the state of
Texas. The UN sent in a peace-keeping force to help maintain security
in the early days of the new administration, which will have to
set up everything -- all the details of starting up a new country
from stamps, currency and a constitution to establishing its internet
domain extension (they want .ss which is unlikely to be granted
because of its association with the Nazi party). There also will
be a game of musical chairs at the UN to create a seat for the
Repubic of South Sudan's ambassador to the UN. Exactly where that
seat will be will be determined by which official name it selects
South Sudan or the Republic of Sudan as seating is alphabetical
(in English).
The country's only source of income is oil. Already there is disputed
border territory the south is accusing the north of occupying.
